Fish oil and Omega-3 fatty acids have been in the news lately, with experts recommending that we add them to our daily routines for increased health.
We certainly all want to be healthy, and as moms, we automatically think about what to do for our kids’ health as well.

A few months ago, I took my kids to see a new pediatrician for their yearly physicals. Our former (beloved) pediatrician had decided to go into a different field of medicine, so we were forced to switch to a new doctor.
After getting some recommendations from trusted neighbors and friends, we settled on a doctor from a popular practice in our area. On our first visit, after reviewing my child’s medical records from the old doctor, she asked me if my child had ever had his cholesterol tested.
I was a little taken aback by the question…I thought he was much too young to have to worry about cholesterol at age 10!
Unfortunately, my child had never had the test, so the doctor took a blood sample from him and called me with the results the next day.

In addition to the supporting heart health, one component of fish oil, DHA, or docosahexaenoic acid, “is essential for brain development and accounts for 97 percent of the omega-3 fatty acids found in the brain and 25 percent of the brain’s total fat content,” according to nutrition specialist Cathy Wong.
Researchers at the University of Oxford found in a study that the “levels of Omega-3 fatty acids in the blood significantly predicted a child’s behavior and ability to learn…Higher levels of Omega-3 in the blood, and DHA in particular, were associated with better reading and memory, as well as with fewer behavior problems as rated by parents and teachers.
Additionally, a study found in European Child and Adolescent Psychiatry showed that kids who took DHA supplements for 6 months “had small improvements in psychosocial functioning, emotional problems, and focused attention.”
With DHA and other omega-3 fatty acids being such a big component of the brain and having such a big effect on learning, behavior and concentration, it seems important to make sure that our kids are getting enough of them in their diets.
Is Fish Oil good for kids?
Usually, eating fatty fish, such as salmon, tuna or mackerel, a few times a week is enough to ensure that your kids are getting enough omega-3s into their bodies.
