As many of you know, my dear friend Sandra has spent the past seven months helping her 4 year-old son David through his struggle with severe Aplastic Anemia.
Although David was lucky enough to find a bone marrow donor and is on his way to a full recovery, he has gone through enormous physical changes and still has a way to go. In addition to taking care of David, administering his numerous medications, and driving him to his many doctor appointments, Sandra had to live in the hospital for over a month with David while he underwent his bone marrow transplant.
While I tried to be a help and support to Sandra and David through this difficult time, we were separated by several states, and I couldn’t be there in person to physically support them with a hug, a warm meal or a shoulder to cry on.
Luckily, there were many wonderful nurses, doctors and staff to help them through. The support they received from their immediate community was really what helped them endure to setbacks and difficult days.
Do you know a hero?
David and Sandra’s story is, unfortunately, not unique, as many Americans all over the country battle for their health everyday. But the quiet heroes in the background that help these people through their toughest times are really deserving of our love and admiration.
That’s why Health Mart Pharmacy has started a Champions of Care Challenge, in which their pharmacists will award $50,000 in grants to community non-profits to recognize these health heroes for improving health and well-being in their local areas.
