Healthy Whole Grain Eating with Roman Meal

This is a sponsored post on behalf of Mom Central and Roman Meal.

As a mom, one of the things I’m concerned about is that my kids eat a variety of healthy foods so that they can grow up strong and fit. Unfortunately, most of the time I can’t just stick foods in front of them and expect them to actually eat.

Yep, I’ve got a couple of picky eaters at my house…I know you can all relate!

My son would be happy to exist solely on pretzels and drinkable yogurt. My daughter is a little better, but not by much. Luckily, I’ve found a couple of ways to get that healthy fruits, vegetables and whole grains into their bellies.

Smoothies are a big hit at our house, and in the summer, when berries and melons are in season, I can’t keep the refrigerator stocked with enough fruit to satisfy them. Carrots are a treat when the kids get to dip them into Ranch dressing or hummus. Getting them to eat whole grains is even easier, however, thanks to Roman Meal bread.

Healthy Whole Grain Eating is a Snap

When I was young, I spent a lot of time at my grandmother’s house. I have wonderful memories of learning to how to bake, how to make her famous spaghetti sauce, and how to wash dishes in her kitchen.

As lunch time rolled around, she would usually pull out a loaf of Roman Meal bread and make the most delicious BLT sandwiches or sometimes just a simple grilled cheese.

So when I became a mom, it was only natural for me to start buying Roman Meal for my own kids.

When I make grilled cheese for my family, I like knowing that they are getting a healthy dose of their daily requirement of whole grains in just one sandwich…21 grams to be exact. The kids don’t realize that the bread they are eating is good for them, they just like the way it tastes.

Roman Meal is also very fresh bread–they bake fresh in dozens of regional bakeries across the country–meaning that the bread you buy in your local grocery store was baked locally and was never frozen.

Benefits of whole grain eating

Making something as decadent as French Toast healthy (OK, semi-healthy) is easy too…just use Roman Meal in place of your regular bread.

whole grain breakfast

On Saturday mornings, I like to make a big batch of my mom’s French Toast recipe for our family breakfast. It’s not your regular recipe of eggs and milk; it is more of a batter that you dip bread into and place on the griddle.

Using a whole grain bread like Roman Meal in this recipe not only gives my family a good deal of whole grains, but vitamin D and calcium as well. We also see the benefits of better digestion, weight maintenance, and the possibility of a reduction of our risk of heart disease (which runs in our family).
