4 Weeks of Frugal Family Fun (Day 18)-Homemade Birdfeeders

I’ve missed several days in the 4 Weeks of Frugal Family Fun series over at Money Saving Mom, due to the power outage and vacation, but I think we’re finally starting to get back to normal around here!

I found this craft on Pinterest (what in the heck did we all do before Pinterest?) and was pleasantly surprised to find that I had all the supplies already on hand!  That never happens…

I gathered up 2 paper towel rolls, a bag of birdseed and a jar of peanut butter.  We cut the rolls into halves, making them easier for the kids to handle.  I then poured the seeds into an old plate for dipping.

We simply spread peanut butter on the paper rolls to cover.

Then we rolled the tubes in the seeds so that they stuck to the peanut butter.

The clean-up was easy…just licked our fingers 🙂

After the rolls were done, we took them outside to hang in some trees.  I just used some curling ribbon to thread through the tubes and tied them onto a few branches.

The birds might not get too much of a snack…we already saw several squirrels trying to get to the feeders! Emily tried yelling “Shoo!” at them, but they pretty much ignored her. Ha!

What kind of family fun are you having this summer?

  1. Looks like your kids had fun doing this project. We have many birds in our yard so they would like these I am sure. But I am sure the squirrels would get them at our house also.
