Summertime can be so much fun…warm, sunny weather, a relaxed schedule (no school!), and being able to spend lots of time swimming and unwinding by the pool. Unfortunately, for those of us with colored-treated hair, the sun, chlorine, and heat can take a toll on our expensive color.
Here are a few tips for maintaining that summer hair color:
1. Protect your hair from the sun. After being cooped up inside all winter, summer is when we all can finally get outside and enjoy ourselves. Most of us are good about protecting our skin with sunscreen and protective clothing, but we forget about our pretty hair color that cost us a small fortune down at the salon. Those of us with red color like me (I use a copper brown hair color), are especially prone to color fade from the sun. Take care to wear a hat when you’ll be out in the sun to protect your investment.
2. Keep chlorine from changing your color. When it’s hot outside, there’s nothing more enjoyable that a dip in a nice cool swimming pool. Sadly, the chlorine can do a number on your color, not to mention the hair itself. One way to prevent the chemicals from getting onto your hair is to wear a swim cap. If you don’t have one or just don’t like the look, you can reduce the effect of chlorine on your hair by first rinsing it in regular water so that your hair doesn’t absorb as much of the pool water. After you’re done swimming, make sure to rinse again in clean water to get rid of any lingering chlorine.
3. Use a good shampoo and conditioner that protects color. I recently switched to the Pantene Platinum Color Lock shampoo and conditioner system, available at Sam’s Club. Over the past 6 weeks that I’ve been using it, I’ve noticed that my color stayed fresher longer. Even my stylist, who I saw about 4 weeks ago, mentioned how nice my color still looked.
Here’s what my hair looked like before and after using Pantene Platinum:
My hair looks a bit lighter in the photo on the right because I usually go a few shades lighter for the summer…the photo on the left is the remainder of the darker color I usually use in the winter months. Overall, though, I really think the Pantene maintained my color very well, especially since I’ve been outside quite a bit with my kids over the past few weeks.
In addition to keeping my color looking great, I really love that the Pantene at Sam’s Club comes in big bottles with a pump. It makes it so easy to use while in the shower, because there is no fumbling with caps while you have wet hands…you just reach over and pump out the amount you want straight into your hand. And there’s no mixing up which bottle is shampoo and which is conditioner!
Even though I’ve been using it daily for over 6 weeks, the Pantene bottles from Sam’s Club are still half-full, making summer hair care very affordable.

Hope you have a happy and color-safe summer!
