I have to share with you my most favorite workout in the whole world…BodyPump. It’s a 60 minute weight-based workout by Les Mills that is the most effective and FUN thing that I’ve ever done. I’m totally addicted.
I started doing Pump (as we regulars like to call it) about 19 months ago, shortly after joining our local gym. I needed to do some muscle training, but I didn’t know how to use any of the weight machines, and the guys in the free weight room were really intimidating, so when I saw this class listed in the gym schedule, I decided to try it out.
The workout consists of 10 “tracks,” (or songs), with each track focusing on a different part of the body. Each release is structured the same, i.e., you always work your muscle groups in the same order…warm-up, squats, chest, back, triceps, biceps, lunges, shoulders, abs and stretch.
Les Mills always picks the most fun and energizing songs to use in their workouts…that’s why I love to come to class. Well, that and the results that I see.
Now, don’t get me wrong…this is not a walk in the park. BodyPump is HARD. The first class I took left me super sore for 3 days. Like the “don’t touch me because it hurts” kind of sore. Or the “I can’t get out of bed because I can’t move” kind of sore. Well, that was mostly my fault for thinking I could lift more than I should have. But I’m telling you, I felt muscles in my body that I didn’t even know were there. The workout actually works.
For the first time in my life, I actually have toned and visible biceps, triceps and shoulders! My legs are so muscular now! I have developed a ton of strength as well (which REALLY helps when carrying a big load of groceries into the house or carrying my 3-year-old down the street.)
Oh, and did I mention that you get a cardio workout at the same time? A huge fat-burning workout and muscle training all in one short hour.
If you are looking for a new fitness routine this New Year, I would highly recommend BodyPump. I just can’t say enough good about it!
